Drift
November 16, 2006- December 16, 2006
210 11th Ave
The
Fischbach Gallery is pleased to present Drift by
Gaines Peyton opening 16 November and continuing through 16 December, 2006.
What happens when you gaze at a painting by
Gaines Peyton? Your eyes drift across the painting’s surface; first viewing the perfectly still, floating forms and symbols. Then studying the surface, your eyes discern the layers of color that form the patina. You grasp Peyton’s organic process: adding, removing, scraping away at the surface to create the perfect loan in which to place images, so that they glide timelessly.
Akin to ancient miniatures, Peyton’s paintings draw the viewer in and in. Upon closer inspection, the serenity of her objects combine with the energy of her process, to make her works subtly uneasy—as if the static and active elements have only just found a reconciliation.
Peyton summons up her childhood submerged in nature by a river in Florida. You sense the liquid nostalgia of a slow tide’s miasma. Even when she occasionally places her objects in a recognizable landscape, there are always streams flowing by, water on the horizon, or snow blanketing the land, waiting to melt and run off.
