The
Fischbach Gallery is pleased to present If Nancy Was by
Joe Brainard. The exhibition opens 19 April and continues through 19 May 2007. If Nancy Was, created in 1972, is a series of twenty mixed media works and is being shown in completion for the first time.
Joe Brainard, born in 1942, grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma where from an early age showed artistic talent, winning virtually every art contest he entered. He even designed his mother’s dresses. In late 1960 he moved to New York City, where he had his first solo exhibition only four years later. Subsequently he had many solo shows and took part in a great many group shows around the country and in Europe and Australia. Critic Carter Ratcliff noted Brainard’s “amazing variety”, “his sure hand, the isolated and unflagging energy of his imagination, as well as the sheer beauty of his works.”
John Russell called Brainard’s 1974 the
Fischbach Gallery New York exhibition “the wittiest show of the winter.” Holland Cotter, reviewing a 1995 mini-respective, said “Metaphor and sensuality are the hallmarks of this beautiful show.” And Peter Schjeldahl described Brainard’s work as “things that just about buckle my knees with pleasure.” Brainard’s own writings include the legendary memoir I Remember, hailed by Edmund White as “a completely original book” and Paul Auster as “a masterpiece.” His drawings, collages, assemblages, and paintings are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and many others.
In 1971,
Fischbach Gallery presented its first
Joe Brainard solo exhibition.
Fischbach Gallery presented numerous Brainard exhibitions until his death in 1994.
