The
Fischbach Gallery is pleased to present On the Move, recent paintings by
Thomas Cordell. The exhibition opens 19 April and continues through 19 May 2007.
Thomas Cordell has produced a wide range of work encompassing exotic and rural settings, suburban vistas and cityscapes. His recent paintings specifically portray regions in Argentina, Brazil, France, Mexico, Portugal, and The United States. In On the Move, Cordell continues his examination of the man-made in relation to the natural, envisioning urban and suburban architecture as a "natural" extension of the Earth's surface. The clarity and accuracy of Cordell's approach belies his training as an architect, reflecting a skilled and observant eye that pays particular attention to the nuances of topography. His landscapes are typified by an overt confidence in presenting spatial relationships through precise intersecting planes and energetic diagonals, as well as overlapping layers of pure, translucent color. The innate formalism and sleek presentation of Cordell's sprawling urban environments recalls American modernists like Paul Strand, Charles Sheeler and Alfred Stieglitz.
Tom Cordell was born in Nebraska in 1951. In 1974 he received his M.A. in Architecture from the University of Nebraska and moved to New York City, where he worked as an architect. In 1992 he chose to paint full time and moved north of San Francisco, where he currently resides
