Waterway
November 16, 2006- December 16, 2006
210 11th Ave
The
Fischbach Gallery is pleased to present WaterWay, the recent paintings of
Fredericka Foster, opening 16 November and continuing through 16 December 2006.
Influenced by the palettes of Vermeer and Turner as well as Whistler and Sargeant’s world of grays, Foster brilliantly depicts the nature of water and its constant flux. Waterway represents a six year project based on an outgrowth of a series of paintings on world religions. Painting symbols common to all faiths—Foster has chosen water as her primary focus. Foster attributes this passion for water and her resulting expansive compositions to her upbringing in Seattle.
Foster uses layers of complementary, generally muted oil colors, blending them to a heightened complexity of color, creating a shimmering, constantly flowing effect. For Foster the depiction of an ever-changing subject demands an intuitive process of amplifying subtleties, from choosing restrained color correspondences to enhancing perceivable detail like reflection and surface topography. In sum, WaterWay is a continuing series of visual explorations of fresh moving water, from the deep, isolated fjords of Norway to the industrial Hudson River in New York City.
“Every living thing (and each thing that has ever lived) does so by virtue of water. Water’s interaction with light not only allows the reflections that relax us and gives us an experience of our interconnectedness, it is also the basis of photosynthesis, which creates all of the energy that supports life. Please think about water." -
