Manet, Morisot & Friends in contemporary photographs by
Neil Folberg
Commissioned to create a quite improbable body of photographs about the lives and world of the French Impressionist and painters, I set aside barriers of time and culture to immerse myself in French history and culture of the later 19th century. I discovered an era of social and political turmoil that kindled one of the purest and most brilliant lights ever lit in the history of art. Immersed in their vision and personalities, I was forced to abandon shallow conceptions of what I thought I knew in order to renew their vision in contemporary photographs. The Impressionist's Salon: Pissarro, Cezanne, Monet, Manet, Morisot, Renoir, Degas & Van Gogh became as familiar to me as my own.
I discovered a community of artists linked to one another in concept, friendship and discord. They had created their paintings and pastels in the spirit of what photography would later become but had not yet attained. I looked at modern France through their eyes, met and photographed some of their descendants and attempted to integrate their visions with my own in a manner both lighthearted and serious.
I hope I have made their world more accessible to contemporary eyes in these photographs from France done in the years 2003-2004. To my regret this venue can contain only a small part of my endeavor.
