Florence Lynch Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs and videos by
Carlo Ferraris. The exhibition is on view from February 21 to March 31, 2007. An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Wednesday, February 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Carlo Ferraris started his artistic career as a sculptor creating figurative, object-based, sculptures grounded in a conceptual reality. In 1994 with his move to New York, he ventured into photography which only required a camera, his creative mind, and a darkroom. The 30 or so photographs he made since were created in diverse settings, such as the streets of New York, the studio in its role as a stage set, and his hometown in Italy and its surrounding areas. He incorporated his wittiness and manual skills as a sculptor to create object, set up scenes, and the consequent result is a series of photographs and videos that are clever, amusing, and sentimental.
This exhibition brings together 40 plus photographs and ten videos in a presentation of Ferraris’ last ten years of artistic activities.
A narrative short film, 26 minutes duration, Osamu, incorporates imagery from the photographs to tell the story of a young man who made the astounding discovery of a bulb that creates beams of darkness. ‘’Osamu’’ is also the story of a lonely man who’s loosing contact with the entire world by creating a new realty with the help of his imagination. In general, there is not a physiological construction in the story; the main actors could as well be machines, they just reacting to the situation that they are (push) involved in; with the awareness that they are being watched, living and acting their part sure that they are just characters - but traveling straight on until the tragic end.
Carlo Ferraris is a 2004 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in Photography.
