Florence Lynch Gallery is pleased to present it's Not My Nature, an installation by
Theresa Hackett. The exhibition is on view from September 13 through October 10, 2007. An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Thursday, February 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m..
For this exhibition, the gallery is transformed into a "carton- filled" painting installation that addresses transitory states of placement and arrangement.
On the installation
Theresa Hackett writes as follows:
"It's not my nature; I do not control my environment. At times, I do not control my paintings - they control me. I waver between the micro and the macro; my sense of space is peaceful but yet full of unrest. I am not satisfied, I may never be. Do not let the landscapes fool you; they are not what they seem. I am only playing with figure/ground relationships. If you look further you may find a distorted world in a balanced painting. This constant struggle is my addiction, my co-dependency.
I work on paper on stretched linen; the softness of the material absorbs every increment. I crave surface tension, textural variations and a melancholic palette, but most of all, a sense of humor so that the painting can laugh back at me.
Maybe I transgress through materials, I am obsessed with line... I can't leave things alone; I have to move things, adding and subtracting, finding the right balance, the right placement. Painting is about memory, with a slight possibility to stop time; it is a form of performance. It all comes down to weights and balances."
