The Florence Lynch Gallery is proud to present the work of Carolina Raquel Antich. This is her second solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition is on view from November 15, -- December 29, 2007. An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Thursday, November 15 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Following her first exhibition, this recent body of work is a continuation of her negotiations between the child and adult space. The works on view, paintings, drawings and videos use sparse graphic lines to express whimsical childlike environments. Colors within her pieces have a translucent quality as they flow around and behind her cartoon like figures. The Black River series isolates these figures and envelops them in the smooth current of the black water. The details within the water give it weight and movement that the thin lines of the figures go without. The simple compositions of "Black River" offer serene yet striking moments.
"At Night," a 198 x 384 cm painting, her largest on exhibit is a tranquil fog filled forest where sleeping children sink beneath the haze. We enter the scene as if in a lucid dream of a childhood past. The black river winds with bold graphic curves through a ground which has no clear beginning or end. The river's tributaries snake through the bottom of the painting and mimic the curving branches of the trees. The faint moon illuminates the fog and creates the shadows that thinly overlay the children.
Her technique with acrylic paint evokes a sense similar to the use of water color. The translucence of the paint allows the texture of the paper and the paintbrush to contribute to the composition. These delicate scenes are detail focused, and invite the viewer to look closer.
Born in Rosario, Argentina, Antich Lives and works in Venice. She has exhibited extensively in Europe and South America. In 2006-2007 one person exhibitions included Art-U-Room in Tokyo, Gimpel Fils in London and Prometeo in Milan. Awards include, (Prize for Young Italian Art) 2005 Finalist, Premio per la giovane arte italiana, 51st Edition Venice Biennale. 2003, Premio Bevilacqua La Masa 87 mostra collettiva. 1998, Corso Superiore de Arti Visive, visiting Professor Hamish Fulton, Fondazione Ratti, Como. 1995, Grant, perfezionamento per giovani artisi, director Guillermo Kuitca, Fondazione Proa, Buenos Aires.
* Many Boys asleep in the forest of dreams was inspired by the Black River series and written for the exhibition by Lee Klein, a poet, living and working in New York.
