James A. Porter (1905-1970) was both an art historian and a painter. Although he is best remembered for his intimate portraits of his family and friends, he also painted still-lifes, landscapes, and genre scenes from both his immediate surroundings and his broad travels throughout Africa, Cuba, and Mexico.
Porter entered Howard University in 1923, immediately following graduation he was offered and accepted the position as instructor of painting and drawing at the University. He later continued his artistic education at New York University, the Art Student League in New York City, and the Institute d'Art et d'Archeologie in Paris, where he studied Baroque art. He earned his Masters in art history from New York University. In 1965, the National Gallery of Art selected him as one of the nation's 25 best art teachers and he was also named one of "America's most outstanding men of the arts."
