Tell Us a Story (2006)
Galeria Ramis Barquet is pleased to present an exhibition by British artist James Rielly. Tell Us a Story, is mainly comprised of a series of his most recent watercolors as well as a multi-panel piece from the artist’s prior work.

The imagery in Rielly’s oeuvre has been characterized by the use of a subtle language that captures ambiguous scenes of the bizarre. His works seem to reverse notions of childhood and adulthood; innocence seems tainted with gravity while maturity is often mischievously absurd. The inspiration behind Rielly’s works comes from stories that he has collected along the way, as well as from found photographs and pictures. These images, removed from their original contexts, can either stand alone or are sometimes interweaved into one single scene. Inherent in every one of Rielly’s pieces is an explosive element that is only gently implied and quietly portrayed.

The watercolors in Tell Us a Story are broader in subject matter than Rielly’s prior work. Although children are still present, the focus is dispersed into random scenes tinged with black humor of family, people, relationships and death, among other subjects.

James Rielly was born in Wrexham, Wales in 1956. He currently lives and works in Toulouse. Previously he studied at the Belfast College of Art, and earned fellowships at the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin and the Tate Gallery in Liverpool. His most recent solo exhibitions include Nipples at Distrito Cu4tro in Madrid (2006); Full of Possibilities 2 at Galeria Ramis Barquet Monterrey (2006) and Life of Rielly at the Timothy Taylor Gallery (2005). Among his most recent group exhibitions are Contre-Images at Carré d’Art, Nimes (2004) and Outlook at the Benakri Museum, Athens (2003). Rielly’s work was also featured in Sensation! which traveled from the Royal Academy, London to Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York (1997-1999).
