Galerie Adler is pleased to announce the New York solo debut of German artist
Sebastian Gögel.
Sebastian Gögel’s (*1978 Thuringia, 1997-2005 Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig) artworks reveal spaces full of contradictions and conflicts. Subterranean traps, hiding-places and secrets appear everywhere in his paintings. Fissures and hidden backgrounds turn dimensions topsy-turvy. He creates a gloomy world inhabited by hermaphroditic beings who are hybrids in an ongoing evolution.
Gögel’s paintings invert reality, exposing complex inner worlds. Skin is stripped away from bodies, revealing their fleshy and formless substance. His characters are defined by their twisted and elongated extremities, inflated heads, and stretched noses. They inhabit spaces that contain confusing pitfalls swollen with every imaginable fear and tension. Within this exaggerated pandemonium all sorts of inscrutable and incomprehensible fantasies attain their artistic form. Gögel plays a game of distortion and mirroring, layering multiple meanings and statements within his pieces
This excessive degree of energy and expressiveness is offset by works whose sobriety and purity stand in contrast to the grand pastose gesture. Gögel depicts a spectrum of strained exertion on both the individual and social level with protagonists who have grown rigid within a strict hierarchy. He repeatedly paints and draws the embittered and contorted physiognomies of various personalities. These figures give expression to a degenerate social world in which everyone attempts to assess and deceive each other. Beneath the facade of spurious respect and feigned interest, all esteem for others is surreptitiously discarded, and one’s own advantage is single-mindedly sought after.
