An exhibition of Photographs to Benefit Broadway Cares/EFA

A restless look, a spontaneous gesture A dancer's nervous energy allowed to expend itself backstage at a Broadway Bares event Roundabout Theatre actors caught in a cramped dressing room or inside a green room where they await for their cues The very openness of exposed desire. In her new suite of theatrical photographs, Rivka Shifman Katvan, our premier cartographer of the unscripted event, lays bare That strange and thrilling and quietly expectant twilight when the sun has set the performers are all dressed and made up, but the stage has yet to shine its lights on their evening’s disguise. Rivka seizes something truthful and soulful about these actors and dancers, who conceal themselves within the trappings of their characters She illuminates the natural beauty of bare skin, the glitter and grit of the painted face, the continuous forward motion of the theatrical life. Her photography marries the tumult of transformation with the intermediate moments of anticipation. She is one of Broadway's sharpest pair of eyes.

Randy Gener Writer, playwright, senior editor of American Theatre magazine

Rivka Shifman Katvan’s photographs have been widely celebrated throughout New York’s theatric and artistic communities. She has photographed the backstage transformation of some of the most beloved Broadway stars. Her photographs are not pictures of actors posing, they capture the moment that illusions are created. She is the only photographer allowed behind stage at the Tony Awards. Katvan has been involved with Broadway Cares fundraising events since 1997.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) is the nation’s largest leading industry based non-profit AIDS fundraising and grant making organization that draws from the talents and resources of the theater community. BC/EFA directly supports individuals in the entertainment industry affected by HIV/AIDS, provides assistance to other national HIV/AIDS organizations, promotes AIDS awareness, supports advocacy, public policy and research for a cure for HIV/AIDS. Most importantly, BC/EFA generates funds to fulfill the aforementioned goals. For more information, please visit www.broadwaycares.com
