Bare Exposures: Behind the Scenes on Broadway
June 5, 2006- June 23, 2006
Reception: June 5, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
138 W 17th St
An exhibition of Photographs to Benefit Broadway Cares/EFA
A restless look, a spontaneous gesture
A dancer's nervous energy allowed to expend itself
backstage at a Broadway Bares event
Roundabout Theatre actors caught in a cramped dressing room
or inside a green room where they await for their cues
The very openness of exposed desire.
In her new suite of theatrical photographs,
Rivka Shifman Katvan,
our premier cartographer of the unscripted event, lays bare
That strange and thrilling and quietly expectant twilight
when the sun has set
the performers are all dressed and made up,
but the stage has yet to shine its lights on their evening’s disguise.
Rivka seizes something truthful and soulful
about these actors and dancers, who conceal themselves
within the trappings of their characters
She illuminates the natural beauty of bare skin,
the glitter and grit of the painted face,
the continuous forward motion of the theatrical life.
Her photography marries the tumult of transformation
with the intermediate moments of anticipation.
She is one of Broadway's sharpest pair of eyes.
