Brookie Maxwell’s solo show, Innocent When You Dream, is a multimedia exhibition including large-scale drawings, sculptural installation, and video. Employing an unorthodox cast of characters, Maxwell stages theatrical tableaux as reference for her Renaissance-style drawings. She uses biblical themes juxtaposed with controversial contemporary issues to address the political ideology of the present, while receiving universal context from the past.
The Pieta, wherein the Virgin Mary holds the body of her dead son Jesus, is re-imagined to depict the scene after a gang killing in Brooklyn.
In The Annunciation, the angel Gabriel informs Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Maxwell’s Annunciation is set in the Fulton Housing Projects of Manhattan and addresses a woman’s right to choose.
The Pieta, The Annunciation and the forthcoming Exodus are a trilogy of large-scale drawings completed in Caran d’ache crayon on birch wood doors.
Maxwell’s work is currently on view at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, ME, and has recently been featured at LaGuardia College, John Jay College, A.I.R., Henry Street, The Hudson Guild, Dance Space Center, Fire Patrol No. 5 Gallery, The Puffin Room, and Saint Peter’s Church.
