Gallery 138 is pleased to present Nudity, Psychosis, Death: Anything On Fire Is Beautiful, a video/mixed media installation by
Zefrey Throwell, opening March 28, 2008. In his first solo show in New York, Throwell’s videos explore human behavior, mixing the mundane with the horrific and appalling. In one video, like a modern rendition of a Freudian dream, a man sets up his work cubicle in the middle of San Francisco’s financial district, and strips naked while busying himself on the phone and the computer; in another, a train passes endlessly though stations without ever stopping, a third depicts a little girl fearlessly strokes an enormous python which lies around her neck, heedless of the danger or the unconscious sexuality of her actions.
“I am attempting to be as honest as I can possibly be,” Throwell says, “I do not think that my videos, paintings or projects depict anything half as twisted, beautiful, macabre, or hilarious as what the average person walking down the street thinks about on an hourly basis. We are murderous folk in our minds! We are loving people in our minds! We are completely embarrassed and ashamed and we are also proud and generous! We have these thoughts. To expect real violence, frothing emotion, and genuine passion not to make it into the holy wings of art is worse than naive, it is dishonest. That is no longer the life that I want to choose.”
Zefrey Throwell is an artist living and working in San Francisco. His work has been exhibited at The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, The Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, and The Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow, Scotland. Throwell was most recently featured in the Bridge Miami Art Fair with
Gallery 138, and the 2007 Venice Biennale with P.S.1. He is a member of two collectives: Red76 and Thin Ice Collective. Throwell works with
Gallery 138 in New York, and is a contributing member to WPS1 (PS1/MoMA's radio station).
