Walk the Plank
April 20, 2006- May 18, 2006
Reception: April 20, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
138 W 17th St
Kambui Olujimi’s first solo show, Walk the Plank, is a multi-media exhibition including installation, video, and photography. Walk the Plank is a conceptual tribute to the life and artistry of the late great Nina Simone. April 21st marks the third anniversary of her passing.
Nina’s music explores the perils of navigating contemporary socio-economic terrain. She charted a complex emotional course from the ephemeral nature of racism to the volatility of love.
Olujimi references Nina Simone’s songs and mines all aspects of black culture to produce videos like Heartaches and Toothaches, and sculptures like Testing Testing 1, 2, 3, and Peaches. His work reflects not only hip-hop lifestyle but also the cultural language of little girls and grandmothers.
Like Nina’s music, Kambui’s artwork is intimate, seductive, courageous and passionate, tirelessly questioning the world we live in.
Olujimi’s video collaboration with Hank Willis Thomas, Winter In America, was featured in Frequency, at the Studio Museum in Harlem. He has also been featured in the Scope Art Fair NYC, 2006; Open House at the Brooklyn Museum of Art; URB Visual -Urban Arts in the 21st Century at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki; The ArtReview 25 at Phillips de Pury Gallery in New York.
Art Reviews of Walk the Plank
New York Times May 12, 2006 | | Holland Cotter | | "...Kambui Olujimi's first one-man show is dedicated to Ms. Simone and touches on subjects she would have understood. One piece is about the ''brown-bag test,'' once a popular method for determining social exclusion by gradations in skin color. Another simulates an all-promise, no-win national lottery. A third uses the form of the gold nameplate, a status symbol for young African-Americans, to spell out the phrase ''Always Bet on Black.''..." |
