Inspired by seventeenth century landscape painters,
Thomas Germano creates scenes depicted from recognizable places and structures, blended with an imaginative element. Germano paints through his memory and experience of a place, as opposed to recreating from a photograph or plein aire. Pulling from his memory, Germano's pieces often have a dreamlike quality to them, enhancing their soft, subtle beauty.
In order to capture the detail and work demanded of such vast structures, Kulla uses "abstract realism" to describe his approach toward these pieces. By cropping the images Kulla is able to focus more clearly on the structural aspects of the piece, which he then paints in a realist style. The actual forms are never manipulated and the colors are true to each form, ensuring the authenticity of the subject matter. By capturing the play of light off of the steel beams, the images lose their cold emotionless effect and we are allowed to see the beauty of an otherwise mundane everyday object. Kulla keeps the scale of his paintings large to re-enforce the shear mass of his subject matter.
Known best for her oil work,
Elizabeth O'Reilly has turned to watercolor for her new series of paintings. Moving away from subjects such as the Brooklyn Bridge and her native Ireland, O'Reilly has focused her latest work on a more figurative subject. The blurred edges of her watercolors create a ghost like image for many of the subjects she paints, such as her faceless sailors, allowing a sense of being. "We artists tend to overthink, but I love the feeling of the painting making itself."
