Artist Jim McShea will exhibit his abstract paintings at the George Billis Gallery, 511 West 25th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenue, from October 10th through November 11th. An artistıs reception will be held at the gallery on Thursday, October 12th from 6-8 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11-6 p.m. In his new series of oil on panel paintings, artist Jim McShea uses two layers to explore the difference between order and rationality versus disorder. The first layer is composed of a freehand grid. While the lines are measured beforehand, and are meticulously rendered, there is a freedom to them that comes from being drawn without the aid of technical tools. McShea feels that the beauty in this layer comes from the ³nuances of the varying brushstrokes.² They ³give the fields a shimmering effect that is both intentional and desired.² McShea juxtaposes the almost nostalgic hand weaving of the first layer with a more modern second layer. Each painting contains a different black and white geometric pattern at its center, what McShea calls the ³primary structure.² He believes that they ³have the look of being logos. Hopefully they are signifiers of a private world, where measure and proportion are of primary importance.² By contrasting these two distinct styles, the artist hopes to create works that are ³both factual and meditative at the same time,² that symbolize ³a world that is ordered and measured but open to new possibilities of relationship.² While each painted can be appreciated individually, McShea believes that when viewed together, the create a ³dialogue from painting to painting.² He keeps ³the format of the paintings consistent so they appear to be related to one another both conceptually and thematically.² The contrast between the two layers in each painting is heightened by repetition. The artist cites Russian Constructivism as one of his influences, and hopes that he carries the ideals of this art movement into the Twenty First Century. Jim McShea is an M.F.A. graduate of the Yale School of Visual Arts. The artist received his undergraduate degree from the Tyler School of Art. McShea lives and works in New Jersey. This is his fourth solo show at the George Billis Gallery.
