Joseph Piccillo's large-scale canvases contrast masculine and feminine qualities, carefully balancing strength and power beside grace and beauty. Horses and ballerinas are central motifs in his current body of work. Through his detailed graphite depictions, Piccillo captures the dynamic movement of both forms, capturing moments of strength and grace. From the definition of muscle to the veins of the neck, Piccillo moves past the ability to create life-like images and creates a moment suspended in time.
Of his recent series,
Robert Hendrickson remarks, "I realize that a painting is the result of human perceptions rendered in my case, in oil bound pigments. It is within this clumsy endeavor that I find what truly excites me about picture making. The engaged struggle to 'see'properly coupled with the task of rendering what you see in a medium that at times can be obstinate in its gooeyness or unyieldingly tricky in its' runniness. I am charmed by the alchemy of transforming this material into something that transcends what it is...paint."
Chris Wright's still-lifes explore everyday objects. He transforms them into items worthy of our admiration, juxtaposing them against stark backgrounds and delicately rendering light and surface. Wright is inspired by objects he considers to be representative of contemporary, consumer-based American life, such as store-bought cakes preserved in their plastic containers and take-out chinese food bags crumpled from use.
