Brooklyn-based artist
Nicholas Evans-Cato draws his inspiration
from the continually changing landscape of New York City. ³These
paintings represent an effort to exploit the pictorial potential of
the urban grid.² The artist is fascinated by the many different
perspectives through which the city can be viewed. At street level,
Evans-Cato enjoys depicting shadow and detail, but occasionally feels
limited by the narrow horizons dictated by the layout of the streets.
He often prefers to climb high above the restrictions of the ground
below in search of a loftier view of the city, where he can capture a
more satisfying panoramic outlook. High altitudes and wide angles
allow him to alter the straight path of the streets below. As the
artists states, ³While box-like canyons of space at street-level
present motifs best captured in a [square] format, in aerial views
these tight spaces are exploded by the distortions of panoramic
perspective in which curvilinear trajectories mirror the dome of the
sky.²
Just as height affords an altered perspective of the city, so
does weather. In continued pursuit of veiling the hard edges and
straight lines commonly associated with urban landscapes, Nicholas
Evans-Cato frequently chooses to paint New York City in the rain and
snow. He explains that ³while the rectangular building and orthogonal
street grid may be the ultimate manifestation of the urban
environment¹s presumed inner logic, in the rain and fog even the most
brutally straight lines are softened.² Reflecting his love for the
city,
Nicholas Evans-Cato continually seeks out situations in which
its harsh silhouettes are dulled and its fast pace is subdued.
Nicholas Evans-Cato holds and MFA from Brooklyn College, CUNY, and a
BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design. He has received coverage
from the New York Times, New York Sun, Greenwich Times, and Art and
among others. This is the artist¹s third solo exhibition with the
George Billis Gallery.
