Rick Dula will exhibit his industrial landscapes
in his second solo exhibition at the
George Billis Gallery, 511 W. 25 St.
between 10th and 11th Avenues from
November 6 - December 8, 2007. An artist's
reception will be held at the gallery on
Thursday, November 8th, from 6 - 8 p.m.
Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 11
a.m. - 6 p.m.
Rick Dula views his photorealistic depictions
of deteriorating factories as obituaries of
American industry. He is drawn to the transience of these structures. While so recently, they stood as the optimistic centers
of economy, they now lie primarily abandoned on the outskirts of towns. Their placement amidst contemporary economy
seems anachronistic. The artist states, “I want to paint what seems to be vanishing from the modern landscape, and want
to preserve some of the beauty before it is gone.”
Once Dula has identified a subject that interests him, he strives to catch it in the most striking and atmospheric light, sometimes
returning multiple times in order to capture a mood. States the artist, “In all my work, I strive to find beauty in places
that aren’t generally thought of as attractive…when captured in certain light or weather, they can make me feel as though
I stumbled upon some otherworldly scene.”
Rick Dula received his B.A. from California State University at Hayward in 1984. In addition to painting, he has worked
extensively as a printmaker and was master printer at Magnolia Editions from 1984 - 2001. He has shown throughout the
United States, and his work is held in many permanent collections including The U.S. State Department, Washington, DC;
The Oakland Museum, CA; and The Rutgers Archives, NJ. Dula’s work was recently featured in the book “Landscapes
of Colorado” by Ann Daley and Michael Paglia. This is Dula’s second solo show with the
George Billis Gallery.
