Stephen Magsig and
Erika Kohr are now showing new works at the
George Billis Gallery. The show runs May 8 - June 9, 2007 with our opening reception May 10, 2007 from 6 - 8pm.
In his latest work,
Stephen Magsig captures not only the detail of the buildings and shops he is painting, but a sense of occupancy. As viewers, we can see that these buildings have been lived in, worked in, and passed by, despite the absence of people from the paintings. Leaving the images to take on their own personalities and characteristics. In a city that is overflowing with people, Magsig masters the art of suggestion, allowing us to fill in the void with our own experiences and images.
Erika Kohr's blown and sculpted glass figures create a narrative that "explores gender, emotion, and our connections to nature." The artist represents human form through clothing shaped by invisible bodies. Some forms are restricted with the delicate lattice of a birdcage, while others are liberated with glass wings, intended to act as a reminder "not to underestimate others as well as ones self."
