Thomas Gregg’s two recent series of standard-sized oil paintings depict monochromatic fabrics draped and knotted around spherical objects. Gregg gives no indication as to the identity of the object beneath the fabric. Instead he relentlessly focuses on the form of the surrounding cloth. Appreciative of the fabric’s ability to conceal and construct, he places each new edifice on a white table, against a neutral background and diligently records its distinct character. Despite the uniqueness of the forms, Gregg remains dispassionately true to the essence of his subject. He states, “Though highly particular and specific, they remain nothing more identifiable than a ball of fabric. It is my hope to create a strange void in the viewer’s experience as the negotiation is made between the coexistence of the painting’s absolute specificity and the subject’s indeterminate identity.” Each painting exists as a member of a series, further convoluting its individuality. Unable to categorize the work as anything other than what it depicts, the works are spared any nuisance of narrative. Viewers are thus forced to appreciate the works on a purely sensory level.
