Sandra Gering Gallery is pleased to present Nonlinear Landscapes, new works on paper by John F. Simon, Jr. from 15 April through 20 May 2006. Known primarily for his software screen work, Simon captures similar intensity and dynamism in these lush, complex drawings. His working process integrates computer mediated and hand drawn elements, blurring the boundary between the two.

Simon’s unconventional approach to landscape leads him to new compositions that are conceptually open-ended. Like the software programs that Simon writes and exhibits on wall-mounted screens, the drawings often have a sense of physical endlessness — elements fold in on themselves or open up in a seemingly infinite series of shapes. Through this rich visual vocabulary, Simon explores possibilities of structure and deconstruction, of growth and generation, of nature and society.

His artist’s book and CD, Mobility Agents, co-published by the Whitney Museum of American Art and Printed Matter in 2005, gives a detailed summary of his ideas about drawing with software. From the early drawing software that he wrote in 1989 to the present show, one sees that, for Simon, the computer has become an extension of his hand.

Nonlinear Landscapes is Simon’s sixth solo show at Sandra Gering Gallery.
