Abetz/Drescher

Goff+Rosenthal

Goff + Rosenthal is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of the Berlin-based artist duo Abetz/Drescher in the United States. Born in Dusseldorf in 1970 and Essen in 1969 respectively, Maike Abetz and Oliver Drescher are a couple whose lives and paintings are wholly intertwined.

The paintings of Abetz/Drescher posit an alternate universe of multilayered, exquisitely rendered imagery drawn from classical mythology and history, art history, architecture, current events, pop music, contemporary history and pop-cultural iconography. Each painting is stocked with a cast of characters that include rock icons, religious and mythological figures. Each canvas is an endless system of associations, references, cross-references, false starts and fantastical possibilities. Fierce guitar-toting angels descend to spread a sixties-era belief in love and united consciousness in one part of a canvas while deafening jets and broken televisions litter another part to create a whole system or, as the artists term it, a “In this group of paintings Abetz/Drescher evince a particular focus on the Renaissance. Says Oliver Drescher: “Now we’re involved with the Renaissance, and it’s a matter of trying to recapture this earlier openness. It’s circle of life.” The paintings are a universe, neither resolutely Utopian or Dystopian but instead pulsing with possibility and an acceptance of change.

incredibly revealing how charged Renaissance images are symbolically.”

Even if Renaissance imagery is used as a loose organizing principle in some of the canvasses, these four paintings—and all of Abetz/Drescher’s oeuvre—are united by the culture, sensibility, and personalities of pop music. The paintings, like contemporary music, draw on a multiplicity of sources and, like the music of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, address eternal themes of love, loss, abandonment and hope. For Abetz/Drescher, pop culture and especially music redeems an otherwise alienated world.
