What a Difference the Night Makes

November 23rd through January 8th, 2005 Goff+Rosenthal Gallery is pleased to announce the first New York solo exhibition of work by Berlin-based artist Britta Lumer. Born 1965 in Frankfurt am Main, lives and works in Berlin, where she had her first solo exhibition with Galerie Griedervonputtkamer last year.

Lumer's paintings of solitary and unremarkable buildings, modest houses, and seemingly random swaths of freeway and urban landscape pulse with life. "I feel like they are actually portraits," says Lumer, "because they have different charactersÑthey are sad or shy, kind of funny, but always very sensitive." The "portraits" are ironically and eerily devoid of any figurative presence.

Despite having only spent four months in the United StatesÑprimarily in New York and CaliforniaÑmany of the images are drawn from American scenes. An apartment building at sunset in Coney Island glows with the promise of a different era, eccentric bungalows seem to invoke an entire mythology of the American West. Yet Lumer hopes the viewer doesnÕt over-read the paintings in terms of their context: "It is not as important where the building is, or who is going in and out, but rather that its isolation reveals the subject as itself."

These desolate yet charged urban and suburban scenes are also about color. Says Lumer: "All these colors, both natural and artificial, only come out at night."

Britta Lumer's paintings are in numerous private collections in Germany, the United Kingdom and the U.S. as well as in the Deutsche Bank collection
