The Architecture of Density
February 23, 2006- April 8, 2006
Reception: March 4, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
529 W 20th St
Well-known internationally this is Michael Wolf’s New York City debut. The emphasis in Wolf’s images is on the architectural grid on buildings in the contemporary urban landscape. Drawn to these seemingly enormous modernist beehives, Wolf captures the intense and complex play of horizontals and verticals, recesses, partitions and walls in a cool exact fashion. His approach is direct and minimal. The planes of these structures could be giant computer circuit boards. Wolf plays with our sense of scale. Microcosm and macrocosm are the same.
His colors are muted, for the most part, and the evidence of the enormous population living in each of these cells is suggested only by the few telling details like curtains or plants on windowsills. These belie the seeming anonymity of the city. The number titles like # 01(b) and # 39 reflect the sparest kind of record keeping.
The selections on view at Hasted Hunt demonstrate how the two-dimensional nature of the photograph itself and the building surface play off of each other. The large size of the photographs further invites the viewer to journey into and through these strange and compelling matrices.
Hong Kong is the subject, but this could be any oversized contemporary city.
Concurrently with The Architecture of Density at Hasted Hunt, the artist has an installation "The Real Toy Story": at the Museum for Contemporary Photography in Chicago.
Michael Wolf was born in German, educated in the United Sates and has lived and worked in Hong Kong for the past decade. His Hong Kong front/door back door was published by Thames & Hudson in 2005 and Steidl in 2006. His earlier projects include Sitting in China (Steidl 2001) and China im Wandel (Fredering und Thaler, 2001) .
