ART&IDEA presents two simultaneous solo exhibitions, Second Nature: Brian Dettmer and Contenido Neto y sus Derivados:
Benjamín Torres. This will be the first solo exhibition in New York City for Brian Dettmer, a Chicago native now based in Atlanta, and
Benjamín Torres who lives and works in Mexico City.
Through his recontextualization of outdated media such as record albums and cassette tapes, Brian Dettmer coaxes new meanings to the forefront of these antiquated modes of communication. In his series of dissected books and maps, Dettmer uses surgical tools to expose the hidden, fragmented meanings implicit within the recycled objects. Other works on view in Second Nature include a sculpture in which a life-sized rose bush made entirely from the tape and plastic shells of old video tapes wraps around an iron fence, and an anatomically correct skeleton comprised of altered audio cassettes.
Concurrently, an exhibition of
Benjamín Torres’ work will be on display in the small gallery. In Contenido Neto y sus Derivados, Torres will show plaster sculptures made from the molds of mass produced household items, such as milk containers, soup cans, and sacks of sugar. The viewer will be able to clearly recognize the objects from their forms as a result of the ubiquitous corporate marketing efforts that surround us. Torres meticulously arranges the sculptures on metal shelves, classified by shape and size, to create an environment of mass consumption.
Brian Dettmer’s work has been shown in group exhibitions throughout the US and he has an upcoming solo exhibition at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago. In 2004
Benjamín Torres participated in Creación en Movimiento, a group exhibition at the Centro Nacional de las Artes in Mexico City; he has also exhibited in venues throughout the US and in Canada.
