Javier Velasco
Artist in front of HIV sculpture
ART&IDEA presents Línea Sutil, a site-specific installation of multi-disciplinary artist, Javier Velasco. This is the first solo exhibition in the United States for Velasco (Spanish, born 1963), who lives and works in the Andalusia region of Spain.

Through his work in film, photography, and sculpture, Velasco explores the dualities inherent in the physical and spiritual being by referencing the dichotomies of life/death and pleasure/pain. Velasco often uses corporeality as a departure point in his extensive artistic practice. He creates complex installations of latex and glass to investigate the social, historical, and religious connotations of the body and its fluids.

The title of the exhibition Línea Sutil—which literally translates into ‘subtle line’—contains a double meaning that refers to the geographical border between the United States and Mexico, as well as the long queue one must wait on to enter San Diego from Tijuana. Velasco creates his own subtle line in this exhibition with an installation of glass that resembles barbed wire fencing. The shadows cast on the gallery walls reference the ominous presence and effects of the strict US border patrol between the neighboring countries.

In addition, the artist’s acclaimed photographs and multi-media sculptures will be on display. VIH / HIV, a crown made of glass thorns, alludes to the moral issues that debilitated the initial research and testing for the sexually transmitted disease. Velasco’s photographs of humans pierced by glass tears are powerful portrayal of human emotion.

Velasco has participated in major international exhibitions, including the 2001 and 2004 Venice Biennale, and P. S. 1’s The Real Royal Trip in New York. His work is included in many prominent private and public collections, including the French Institute in Seville, the University of Salamanca, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid.
