Haydee Rovirosa Gallery is proud to announce the first NY solo exhibition of
Sofía Táboas, Marea Roja.
Through the eyes of Mexican artist Sofia Táboas Marea Roja (Red Tide) opens a new view onto the relationship that we have with nature. The exhibition parallels the destructive forces of nature with human movement across the earth. Táboas draws connections between the ways in which relentless natural elements and humankind leave their mark on the environment through her use of drawing, painting, sculpture, video, and a site-specific installation.
The term Marea Roja (red tide) is used to describe the algal bloom that occurs in some countries like the US and Mexico. Scientists believe that waste produced by humans is responsible for the toxicity of these red tides that kill wildlife. Just as fires burn through forests, lava splashes across the terrain, and algae decimates oceanic creatures, our own species chips away at the earth.
Táboas depicts nature’s critical transformations with her small-scale paintings and obsidian sculptures in which rapidly solidified lava is shaped into the algae that produce red tides. Her installation, Marea Roja, invades the gallery space with a rarified living room that has been playfully dissolved or poisoned, evoking the waves of the red tide. With these works Táboas emphasizes breaking points and critical events, both natural and human.
Sofia Táboas studied at U.N.A.M. art school in Mexico and lives and works in Mexico City. She was a founding member of the artist-run space Temistocles 44, and has exhibited in several solo and group shows in Mexico, France, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Colombia, Japan, and throughout the United States. Marea Roja is Táboas’ first solo exhibition in New York City.
