An exploration of identity and self-expression
Driver's licenses, passports, social security numbers - you won't get very far without government-issued identification. But how do these society staples hold so much personal information yet say nothing about who we really are?
Heidi Cho Gallery is pleased to announce "ID Please," a group show that explores the identities and self-expressive processes of six different artists.
LISA FERGUSON's wildly colorful and freely formed paintings take the viewer on a thrill ride. The emotions she captures on her canvases engulf her audience, be it a wave of calm blues or energized reds and yellows.
HONG SUK LEE recreates and acts out scenes of iconic male images, and filters and flattens them through methods such as filming, scanning, and photo editing. The images, already signs reducing masculinity, are further distorted and degraded by his process.
JOYCE LEE evokes natural imagery within her abstract compositions. Oils in the paint are repelled by solvents, creating naturally formed colorful shapes on her canvas. The paintings tell a story of longing for a true spiritual home.
JANE MAXWELL's deconstructed cutouts of blown-up feminine iconography (i.e. doll cut-outs and Vargas pin-up girls) decorated with vintage food labels is a commentary on the idiom "you are what you eat" and how women are "labeled" by their appearance.
MICHAEL SOUTER's work is aggressively narcissistic; the focal point of the piece is the text "ME", printed backwards, as the letter 'E' streaks across the paper. Deconstructed layers covering egomaniacal text add to his take on self-identity.
The gallery is pleased to announce its newly represented artist,
J. Matthew Riva. The exhibit will also be featuring a work by Mr. Riva in our project space.
