Low Maintenance
June 1, 2007- July 7, 2007
Reception: June 1, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
522 W 23rd St
In a day and age where some artists are passing along actual production along to their assistants,
Peter Reginato staunchly believes in continuing to create his own work. “Having someone else make your artwork is like having someone else make love to your wife,” he says.
Reginato, who usually paints his stainless steel creations with vibrantly colored acrylics, bares it all in his first solo exhibition at
Heidi Cho Gallery. The title of the show, “Low Maintenance” refers to the minimal-to-zero upkeep required for his sculptures if placed outside, as well as the unpainted surfaces of the pieces.
However, his new collection of work is anything but plain. Combinations of organic and abstract shapes—some purely structural—are layered to create mound-like forms, reminiscent of his work in the early 1970’s. Reginato also experiments with figure-like shapes and height in “Tall Cool” and volume in “Sweetheart”. Certain shapes are clearly more dominant than others, reflecting on the imperfections of people and life in our world.
Variations in the sculptures surfaces add depth and give the viewer sensations of coolness and warmth in the same piece. Reginato invites us to interact with his work by allowing us to examine each piece from different angles, simultaneously creating an air of transparency even with a medium such as steel.
Two paintings by Reginato are also on view for the first time, whose compositions playfully reflect the origins of his much larger sculptures.
Peter Reginato was born in Dallas, Texas and raised in the Bay Area, California. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and is the recipient of many honors such as a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant. He has an impressive list of solo and group shows since 1967, including the Whitney Museum of Art Biennial. Reginato’s work can be found in many prestigious public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.
