PARSON'S THE NEW SCHOOL FOR DESIGN, MFA Exhibition
The axe is a folkloric reference to the power of individuals making incisive actions for a common cause. For the past two years, the students featured in this exhibition have been honing their artistic craft together. Out of this collective endeavor, 24 artists are rising, each with a sharp, clear mark to make in this space and the world.
For some time now, seasoned art world veterans have announced a call to arms, pleading with a new generation of artists to change the system. In reality there is nothing new to this request as the history of the arts is littered with uprisings and retrenchments. From the Salon de Refuses to the non-profits of the Twenty-first Century we are all revivified by fresh infusions of creative blood. Artists in the Parsons group are both undermining and redefining what it means to make art in New York City.
The Parsons artists are on various missions to create novel post-modern mythologies, unfurl the trappings of modernist mysticism, introduce elegance to guerilla art, revive the dull-hearted and, in general, create work that embodies a whole-hearted engagement with the world they are redefining. Looked at together, their work, like the glint of many small axes, is alight with innovation and the power to change.
Marilyn Rosenberg, director of the Heidi Cho Gallery, supports the Parsons artists in their efforts. "We in the art community look to our important institutions for the Arts for the next generation of artists. Therefore it is with great pleasure that the Heidi Cho Gallery looks forward to hosting this show."
Presenting artists include Crystal Horton, Andrea Aversa, Matthew Burcaw, Marni Gellman, Xiomara Cotton, Faten Kanaan, Brendan McGillicuddy, Roopa Kosuri, Denise Wallner, Saraleah Fordyce, Katherine Allen, Ashley Kesling, Jes Cannon, Levi Haske, Caridad Sola, Staci Offut, Mary Mihelic, Timothy Marvel Hull, Cassie Rose Kobeski, Mark Tichy, Brian Messenbourg, Rosi Hayes, Jose Gonzales and You Sun Kim.
ABOUT PARSONS THE NEW SCHOOL FOR DESIGN
Parsons has been a forerunner in the field of art and design since its founding in 1896. The school focuses on creating engaged citizens and outstanding artists. Graduate students in the Fine Arts program engage in a rigorous studio practice, work as part of a dynamic artistic community, and establish themselves in the context of critical theory and contemporary artistic movements.
