Howard Scott Gallery is pleased to announce the opening - on Thursday, January 17 - of a solo exhibition by the Dutch artist, Vincent Hamel. The forthcoming exhibition - of paintings completed during 2006 and 2007 - will be the Amsterdam-based artist's fourth one-person exhibition with this gallery.

Hamel's paintings have a very specific physical presence. Because of the artist's concentrated focus on the most fundamental aspects of "what is a painting", their objecthood is an all-important characteristic. [ In this regard, Hamel's works bear a cousinship to the work of such disparate artists as Robert Ryman and Richard Tuttle.]

Appearing at first view to be monochromatic, the paintings reveal, through close scrutiny, that their highly individual surfaces - from work to work - are composed of a number of layerings of paint, each of which is transparent to a varying degree, affording the viewer the combined sensory impact of two or more hues. Hamel places great emphasis on the length and the direction [vertical, horizontal, diagonal] of each stroke and on the specific degree of viscosity of the paint. It is the interaction of these two elements which contributes greatly to the "atmosphere" of the individual work.

Hamel also places much importance on achieving in each work a synthesis of contrasting concerns: amongst these are the strength and clarity of the individual stroke, or gesture and the unifying presence of an accretion of component strokes to achieve an all-over field; the delicacy and specificity of the actual coloration achieved through the layering of transparent hues and the vigor of the physical object; and the energetic and the reposeful.

Mr Hamel's work is included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, in addition to numerous other collections in Europe and the United States.
