Hudson Franklin is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new paintings by the Brooklyn-based artist
Martin Esteves.
Esteves's exhibition includes two new series that reference the American spirit of exploration in the 1960s. In the first, lunar modules are depicted landing in forests, with groups of statuesque deer as the only witnesses. The moon landers are anthropomorphic, with appearences ranging from benign to omnious. Esteves layers these paintings in reverse to reveal the brushstrokes behind a slick, plastic surface. His technique emphasizes the Cubist nature of the landers' designs. In his own words, "The Apollo series of moon-landing modulated pods, symbolic of the highest of achievements, are continually beautiful because of their rough-hewn, emblematic clumsiness."
In the second series, paintings of stripes are produced in Esteves's other customary technique, in which the acrylic paint is applied in reverse, peeled from the plastic and hung on its own. Titled "Unaccompanied stripes," these paintings are clipped to plywood sheets and lean against the gallery walls. Their height, verticality and plasticity become a totem to painting.
The Dropouts is
Martin Esteves's third solo exhibition with
Hudson Franklin. He received an M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003.
