CHA-NO-YU

Ippodo comes to us as a platform for exhibiting works by leading figures in contemporary Japanese craftwork. The works honor a tradition rooted in Japan’s verdantly sylvan landscape. And they transplant that tradition marvelously into contemporary lifestyles. This inaugural Ippodo exhibition in New York is a gratifying opportunity for me to present three different cha-no-yu (tea ceremony) formats: an oritatami collapsible tea room, a table for ryurei participation seated in chairs, and a yojodaime four tatami mat tea
room.
Cha-no-yu is an occasion for arraying the finest beauty of a full range of Japanese craftwork. Host and guests enjoy a dialogue of word and spirit in the quiet setting. Shaping the moment is the graciously unimposing hospitality of the host in the tastefully appointed interior. After a kaiseki meal of delicate seasonal dishes, the tea drinking unfolds through a round of hefty koicha, followed by lighter usucha.
Pervading the chashitsu (tea room) is the careful attention devoted to the tea, to the tea implements, to the flowers and incense and other mood-defining elements, and of course to each guest. The participants handle diverse utensils and other items, which are famously exquisite works of different kinds of artisanship. Gracing this exhibition are works by seven distinguished artists.
Be sure to take this opportunity to examine their remarkable creations and to venture into the enchanting world of cha-no-yu.
