Continuing his ongoing exploration of the fine line between abstraction and representation California artist RayTurner has produced a body of work which reads powerfully in both directions. Drawing upon the hard facts of nature - earth, air and water - Turner employs the colors and textures of the land as a foundation for pure painterly excursions.
Thick layers of paint combined with an incredibly nuanced sense of color present the viewer with a compelling dichotomy. These are works clearly rooted in the tradition of landscape painting but pushing well beyond that tradition.
The sense of place is palpable. The interplay of light and shadow is undeniably a function of the natural world. And yet there is a clear sense of the artist’s hand. The almost sculptural layers of paint that stand off the surface of the canvas push this work into the realm of pure pictorial space. They are landscapes that radiate presence, that are somehow more than the sum of their parts.
Clearly there is technical virtuosity at work in handling these disparate elements with such apparent effortlessness. But the technical becomes transparent in Turner’s hand. Never falling prey to slick representation or mere illustration Turner’s works somehow inhabit both real and unreal places simultaneously. As much post impressionist as post modernist Turner’s work resists categorization by formal genre. These are paintings that combine the mythic with the poetic, the emotional and the pictorial. The complexity of their surfaces demands our attention as much as the evocative quality of places they depict seduce our senses.
