ASIAN CONTEMPORARY ART WEEK Featuring Pei-Lin Kuo
May 23, 2006- May 27, 2006
533 W 26th St
28 MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES TO PRESENT ASIAN VIDEO ART DURING ASIAN CONTEMPORARY ART WEEK IN NEW YORK, MAY 22 - 27, 2006
The
James Cohan Gallery is pleased to announce our participation in Fast Futures: Asian Video Art, a citywide exhibition of 35 works selected by Asia Society Museum Director Melissa Chiu, independent curator Yu Yeon Kim, and Museum of Modern Art Curator Barbara London. The works were drawn from submissions sent by over 100 leading and emerging artists from locations ranging from Turkey, Afghanistan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong and will be shown at participating galleries in New York.
We will be exhibiting
Pei-Lin Kuo, a Taiwanese artist residing in Long Island City. Her work, A.K.A. 08494####, 2005 is a short film that examines identity through an amalgamation of numbers pertaining to her private life, i.e. clothes, food, and sex, as well as how she is defined publicly, i.e. passport number, social security number and credit cards. Amidst this seemingly mundane recitation, Kou presents an unexpected levity and clarity in defining a contemporary self-portrait.
Pei-Lin Kuo's video coincides with an exhibition of new works by Japanese video artist Hiraki Sawa. During Asian Contemporary Art Week,
James Cohan Gallery will be open Tuesday, May 23 - Saturday, May 27 from 10 AM to 6 PM with a special evening viewing on Thursday, May 25th until 8:30 PM. For more information, please visit our website
