James Cohan Gallery is pleased to announce an evening of music and dance in conjunction with an exhibition of new works by visual artist, Yun-Fei Ji.
Performers will include fellow Chinese expatriates; Yin Mei, contemporary dancer; Min Xiao Fen, internationally acclaimed pipa player; as well as modern dance troupe, Jennifer Muller: The Works. This evening promises to be a fine example of contemporary expression with roots grounded in tradition.
Yin Mei, born in China and classically trained in traditional Chinese dance, now performs her contemporary choreography worldwide. Her collaborative work, Nomad: The River played to sold-out crowds in 2005. Voice critic Deborah Jowett wrote, that “[e]very action is dreamlike—real yet unreal…” Mei will perform her newest piece, Magic in the Square Word, a work in which she blends dance with visual art, creating a long scroll of calligraphy with her body, inks and paper.
Min Xiao-Fen was taught to play pipa, the traditional 4-stringed instrument, by her father in China and has become an international composer, performer and music pioneer. Adventure and exploration remain hallmarks of her work whether playing Tan Dun, Thelonius Monk or her own compositions. Founder of the Blue Pipa Trio, she has played venues as diverse as Joe’s Pub and Carnegie Hall. This evening, she will colloborate for the first time with Yin Mei and perform solo works.
Jennifer Muller: The Works, the internationally acclaimed dance troupe will present Flowers, an innovative work that expresses the cycle of creation-destruction as described in the 5 seasons of the Chinese calendar. Jennifer Muller has developed her unique dance vocabulary based on Chinese Philosophy that acknowledges the energy system in the body as the internal source of movement.
A traditionally trained, contemporary painter, Yun-Fei Ji uses the destruction caused by China's Three Gorges Dam as a backdrop to explore the cultural and psychological effects on the rapidly changing fabric of Chinese life. Ji populates his richly textured landscapes with vignettes of village life in distress. Monumental in scale, these paintings lend a critical eye to contemporary Chinese culture and issues of modernization. His exhibition will be on view through December 22nd.
