Pretense
March 27, 2008 - May 8, 2008
Reception: March 27, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
547 W 27th St
Jason Rulnick is pleased to present the first New York exhibition of
Alice Shaw.
Shaw’s photographs bring sophistication and humor to images taken from her everyday experiences and surroundings. Capturing the art of the moment with her camera, her work lends a sly wit to a rich legacy of documentary photography.
While sorting through her recent images, the artist finds a repeating occurrence: objects in our world that are not what they appear to be. Titled “PRETENSE,” the photographs in this body of work are evidence of a false representation or manipulation of subjects found in real life.
Shaws’s photography was the subject of solo exhibitions in 2007 with B. Sakata Garo Gallery in Sacramento, California, and Gallery 16, San Francisco. Shaw’s recent projects include the book People Who Look Like Me (2006) published by Gallery 16 and the exhibition “Conversations:
Alice Shaw and Marcel Dzama,” presented by the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery (2006).
Alice Shaw lives and works in San Francisco. She received a New York Arts Council Grant in 2002. She has instructed the class “Humor and Photography” at the San Francisco Art Institute and has been a visiting artist at California College of the Arts, San Francisco State, University of California at Santa Cruz, UC Davis and UC Berkeley.
