Jim Kempner Fine Art is pleased to announce for its first show of the fall season, ”The Message is the Medium.” Curated by artist Marshall Reese, this exhibition of recent editioned work is a multivalent look at the currents and crosscurrents shaping our society in the aftermath of September 11th. The exhibition title refers to media theorist Marshall McLuhan’s landmark study (with Quentin Fiore), The Medium is the Message.

Among the artists included in the exhibition are Yoko Ono, Hans Haacke, Carolee Schneemann, Ligorano/Reese, Muntadas, Jim Campbell, Louis Hock, Robert Attanasio, Peggy Diggs, Dread Scott, Peter Scott, Marlene McCarty, Nancy Davenport, Christopher Draeger and others.

Much of the work on view incorporates the very same digital processes and tools utilized by the mass media. The exhibition artists; however, create an entirely different set of alternative messages to show how the impact of images and media shape politics and art today. These works further underscore the necessity and importance of art for understanding and responding to current events.

Nancy Davenport’s ”Terrorist 1” and ”Bombardment,” 2001, from the Apartments series, are digital prints of cityscapes and blend fiction with reality. Davenport alters photos of nondescript buildings to look like they are reportage of terrorist attacks.

Constantin Boym exhibits 10 to 12 small sculptures from his highly celebrated “Buildings of Disaster” series. Individually cast in bonded nickel, each sculpture functions as a souvenir or small momento of buildings associated with prominent media events and disasters. The series includes The Unabomber cabin, Watergate, The Texas Book Depository, the Chernobyl reactors and others.

Jim Campbell’s “Political Protest New York 2004 1” is a backlit panel of time-lapsed images of protest and demonstrations during the Republican Convention two years ago. The work is a kaleidoscopic mosaic of scenes from all over New York City. Campbell collages these images into a cubistic comment on the vitality and diversity of political action by using his own custom-designed software to slice up and combine imagery.

Marshall Reese, curator of the exhibition, is part of the collaborative team Ligorano/Reese. Their installations and limited editioned artworks analyse the latent political, social and cultural meanings of imagery in the media and the internet. For this exhibit the artists situate a large scale digital print moment when Chief of Staff Andrew Card informed the President of the attack on the Towers.

Peggy Diggs shows photos from Readiness, a project she undertook during a residency at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. After interviewing a number of survivors from the 9/11 attacks, the artist designed and fabricated a special safety suit with layers for food, medicine and documentation. Her suit goes beyond fashion to provide clothing and survival tools for future victims of natural and manmade disasters.
