Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present Après la Pluie (After the Rain),an exhibition of new work by the
French artist
Koralie.This is
Koralie’s debut exhibition in New York and her first solo show with the gallery.
With a brightly colored palette and voracious eye for catchy, decorative flourish,
Koralie borrows liberally from
the visual traditions of Asia,Africa, and Europe. Her multi-tract practice migrates freely between painting,
installations,Web projects,graffiti “wheatpasting,”and fashion and graphic design.
Across all of these,a geisha-like figure appears repeatedly as the foundation for an explosion of exaggerated
detail, outsized hairstyles, sumptuous clothing patterns, and rich accessories that interact with equally
decorative environments. As the artist notes,“I’m not interested in her as a person but as a doll,in the ways I
arrange her hair, her costumes, and the background.”This combination of modesty and sensuality is
intentionally calibrated not to offend but, rather,to stimulate and entertain the senses.
In Après la Pluie,
Koralie lets loose a torrent of colorful geishas, depicted in rainbow wall paintings, hanging
scrolls, silkscreen works, and large paintings on canvas hung amid collage and other decoration. While
inspired by Japanese visual culture, from thirteenth-century prints to contemporary Manga, the artist also
incorporates an eclectic global menu of references, including African and English hairstyles,Russian dolls,
Indian folklore,and wallpaper design.
Koralie has exhibited widely in France,including in Paris at Galerie Serge Laurent and Galerie L.J.Beaubourg;
Galerie Dojo,Nice;L’Abstrait Galerie,Toulouse;Galerie Neuf,Nancy;and Galerie Côté Artiste,Montpellier.In
2005,
Koralie and partner Supakitch received the “Prix du Jeune Entrepreneur de Mode”at the Who’s Next
International Fashion Fair in Paris for their T-shirt brand Plastique Graffiktee.
Koralie participated in the
independent group exhibition FAME collective, curated by Joshua Liner, presented in Miami Beach during the
2007 art-fair week. She has also exhibited in the United States at Subtext in San Diego and Saba Gallery in
Miami.
Koralie lives and works in Montpellier,France.
