Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts is pleased to announce the opening of Pentameter, an exhibition of five dynamic and diverse artists completing their graduate studies in the Masters of Fine Arts program at the University of Connecticut. Pentameter comprises works by
Valerie Garlick,
Jenn Dierdorf,
Matthew Jensen,
Patrick Earl Hammie and
Krysten Bailey.
Valerie Garlick works in video and digital photography. By pooling collections of girls’ portraits and re-photographing works inspired by missed connections forums, she presents the implications of loneliness and anonymity in online social networks and digital bulletins.
Jenn Dierdorf’s drawings and prints act as records of laborious processes that seek to resolve contradiction and desire. Utilizing repetitive actions that reorganize and quantify, her work creates beauty out of futility.
Patrick Earl Hammie’s larger-than-life paintings explore the tension between power and vulnerability. The paintings draw from his life as a son, a male, and an African-American struggling to synthesize past adversity and acclimatize to present realities.
Matthew Jensen’s photographs portray the wonder and mystery found while exploring America’s oldest industrial towns on foot. The work combines his intimate knowledge as a native with an obsessive devotion to walking every street in every mill town on the Shetucket and Quinebaug Rivers.
Krysten Bailey utilizes all dimensions of printmaking to explore the human body, its growth, transformation, deterioration and decay. The work explores physical and psychological complexities surrounding body and self-perception through a combination of figurative imagery, process, texture, and atmosphere.
Each Saturday one of the five artists will be present in the gallery for discussion of the work and the program. All will be present the night of the reception.
