A combination of printmaking techniques with wax, painting, and drawing, allows artist
Lenore Thomas to create fantastical, abstract environments on small scale panels. In her first gallery exhibition in New York City, A Luscious Blend of Mysterious Forms and Imaginary Friends, at
Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, Thomas presents a series of work that embodies her response to pop culture by way of video games, television, and contemporary design. By reworking found imagery into a language of mark making, color, and design while giving the process of chance to alter the art, Thomas creates an alternative landscape within each work where viewers have a moment to forget about their own reality and enter a landscape that transcends their own.
As a trained printmaker, Thomas utilizes printmaking processes to interchange and combine information in a variety of ways to create and identify new patterns and images. Through layers of wax, traditional and digital prints, painting and drawing, she obscures, alters, deletes and further reduces the given imagery into a collection of select elements. Her interest in these elements may be one associated with beauty, ugliness, or even nostalgia. The multiple layers Thomas creates through this process provide an element of depth on a two-dimensional surface, almost as if she has constructed a theatrical stage for her geometric shapes to converse on. Instead, her stage is a representation of the landscape she has developed in multiple processes. In the end these landscapes are a formal examination of color and design that are created through the principles of artificial selection, chance, and observation.
Lenore Thomas received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Lawrence University and later, her Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also has a certificate in art education and teaches at Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, Indiana. Thomas has participated in a number of exhibitions, both group and solo shows in Wisconsin, California, Illinois, Indiana, and Washington. This exhibition marks her first exhibition in a New York gallery.
