Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Los Angeles artist
Curtis Ripley. Drawing inspiration from the structure and abstraction of music, shadows, maps and charts, Mexican architecture, and "the process of day fading into night",
Curtis Ripley combines intentional illusiveness with the ideals of strict interpretation to form the basis of Another World.
Loosely based on previous compositions, Ripley's paintings eventually take on lives of their own. The use of collage elements such as bits of literature, sheet music, maps and playing cards are all that remain of his earlier, more representational work and lend a more graphic quality to his abstractions. The collage pieces do not reference specific meanings but provide the artist an element to respond to - a catalyst to work as spontaneously as possible.
Ripley's application of paint begins with thin, gestural layers and ends with a series of brushstrokes, scribbles, smears and lines. Using brushes, rags or his hands to move paint around, the artist selects forms to let either recede or show through as "ghost" images behind glazes of oil paint. Other forms remain on the surface, much like the collage elements, that then push and pull in the foreground of highly atmospheric, painterly space. Representational associations are unavoidable such as images of sky, landscape and architecture, lending the paintings an obscure yet concrete quality. Through abstraction, Ripley's paintings avoid obvious representation, accept unavoidable associations, and find a shared space and economic expression for both.
Born in 1949,
Curtis Ripley was raised in Texas. He received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin, has had many solo exhibitions throughout North America and is included in private collections around the world. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
