NEW YORK, NY - May 1, 2008 - Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce an exhibition of seven artists from the Boston area whose use of color is a central aspect of their artistic practice. Each artist uses color to further a formal or psychological conversation with the viewer, and each has a story about why and how they choose a specific color tool to further their intentions. But for all of these artists color is, most importantly, a source of joy.

When Kathryn Markel started making studio visits in Boston in the depths of February, the world was dreary and miserable. To walk into an art space filled with color and energy and warmth, was pure pleasure. One does not automatically associate Boston with color, but, during those few days, she did. Hence the impetus for this exhibition.

Suzanne Ulrich creates small worlds with collage made from circles cut from standard brown mailing envelopes painted with gouache. Her thought process is apparent in each work - the drawn outline of the shape, hash marks, little numbers that help her organize her composition, all remain in the finished piece.

Circles also loom large in Craig Stockwell's practice. He draws rows of circles side by side and then using color and drawing, combines them to make various shapes and forms that can seem organic, graphic or a wide variety of the two.

Diane Ayott uses marks and stamps in patterns over the entire picture plane to create eccentric, slightly skewed compositions that radiate a fierce energy. Layers of riotous color form what she says is an "accumulation of thought" and create strong spatial depth.

Nancy Berlin's practice has typically used formulas to dictate her drawings, but because she's just discovered a new line of intensely colored markers, these new pieces are entirely intuitive. Jagged lines of color break up a monochrome field, and again one can see the joy of working with new materials.

Isabel Riley's wall pieces are created from vibrantly colored, cheap commercial fabrics combined with colorful yarns she has knitted or crocheted. Ordinary materials are turned into beautifully crafted forms that evoke a crazy quilted, haphazard and yet solid architecture.

Kelly Spalding paints with a flat gouache on old printed dish towels and tablecloths from the 40's and 50's. Her palette works off of the worn, warm, strong colors of the fabric and her geometric compositions play with the lines and patterns of the old materials.

Laura Fayer's practice involves making drawing an integral part of the painting surface. She draws shapes on paper and then uses these drawings as templates for cut out pieces of foam core. The images evoke wind, waves and natural energy.
