Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present Boxed and Bagged by
Sydney Licht. This will be the artist’s first one-person exhibition in the gallery.
Sydney Licht is a painter who seeks to bring the long tradition of still life into the 21st century with bold, exciting colors and an underlying focus on current trends in American culture. For this exhibition, the artist is inspired by the boxes and bags that are the leftovers of consumerism. Instead of discarding these objects, Licht dramatizes them, creating monumental relationships of color and form that transform these mundane objects into a theatrical architecture. This monumentality contrasts not only with the surprising small scale of the paintings but also with the creaminess of their surfaces. She describes these objects as “color ‘events’ that are challenging to paint,” as well as visually rewarding.
Licht’s boxes and bags nearly fill the extreme foreground of her paintings, demanding attention; while the bright, sun-lit backgrounds further distinguish the theatrical scale and bold colors of her subjects. The composition of the objects “enable the viewer to perceive the unexpected in things that are often overlooked,” Licht explains. In addition, the tablecloths on which the boxes sit “reflect the visual rhythms that are continually found in the world around us.” Licht’s body of work contains a number of common elements to create a unity within the exhibition. The formal cohesion draws the viewer in and invites him or her to reflect on the line, color and form of the images, as well as what they signify. In Boxed and Baged, Licht transforms the classic still life into a series capable of both surprising and exhilarating its audience.
Sydney Licht received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1983. She has exhibited extensively in Chicago, New York, Ohio, and most recently exhibited at the Second Rochester Biennial at the Memorial Art Gallery. Licht is a visiting professor and lecturer at universities throughout the United States and maintains a studio in New York City.
