Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of paintings by California artist
Alex Couwenberg. Couwenberg’s exhibition, Bypassing Referents, presents a body of work that finely depicts the artist’s attention to detail, process, and appreciation for the aesthetics associated with Southern California culture.
Couwenberg’s dynamic canvases are filled with geometric shapes of varying colors and tones that are barely contained within the limit of the stretched canvas. Couwenberg explains: “The ideas of geometry and the placement of forms within a picture plane are crucial in the picture making process and expose themselves in the form of hard edged compositions that suggest a complete and precise control of medium and image.” He has a strong passion with the process and method of creating his work, revealing an intense yet subtle relationship between geometry, form, and color. His incorporation of elements influenced by Southern California—hot rods, architecture, graphics, surf, and skateboard culture—into his abstraction technique results in a vibrant interaction between layers of the elements within the created space. His construction of layered colors often evokes varying levels of translucence, drawing the viewer to look deeper into the abstract space.
Born and raised in Southern California,
Alex Couwenberg received his BFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and his MFA from Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, CA. He has exhibited work in solo and group shows throughout California, Idaho, Georgia and New York. Couwenberg’s work is in a number of public, corporate and private collections, including the Crocker Art Museum, Long Beach Museum of Art, Nordstrom stores, and various hotel collections across the United States.
Alex Couwenberg currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
