Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce the first New York exhibition of paintings by Montreal artist Peter Hoffer, Common Ground. Hoffer has exhibited extensively in Canada and is represented by the collections of Musee des Bauxs’ Arts and Musee Du Quebec, among other public and private collections.
Peter Hoffer’s new paintings are only superficially about the landscape. They are also not based on observation. Hoffer uses the imagery of landscape - along with his unique painting process - as a metaphor for the constant dynamic and changing face of nature. He works on thick wood panels that have first been scraped, stained, and distressed. He then paints a landscape scene based on memories of thousands of other landscape paintings. The image is applied quickly and has a fleeting, impressionistic quality. This spontaneous gesture is then frozen in a thick, reflective resin coating that provides stark contrast to the hewn wood underneath. The resulting object/painting reflects the dynamics of nature, specifically the constant fluctuation between depth and surface. Elements of the work, such as the unrefined nature of wood and gesture, and the inconsistent resin surface, allude to the artist’s lack of control. The contrast between this sense of abandon in the making and the slick glossy surface is compelling. As Hoffer says “The pieces fluctuate between rest and discontent.”
Peter Hoffer received his MFA from Concordia University in 1996, and continues to live and work in Montreal, Quebec. He exhibits extensively throughout Ontario, Quebec and Alberta, Canada.
