Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present Narrative Abstraction, a group exhibition of works by Pamela Anderson, Trine Bumiller, Declan Halpin, Julian Jackson, Janakie Lennie, Chris Metze, Stephen Pentak, Cynthia Sisson, Sarah Smelser, Lenore Thomas, and Nancy Wride.

Everyone has a story to tell, but not all stories are apparent or straightforward. In the exhibition, Narrative Abstraction, the artists express themselves by using abstraction to overshadow underlying stories depicting actual experiences, fictional events, spiritual journeys, or simply a perspective of the surrounding world. The works in this exhibition are constructions generated to express the intricacy of experiences in conjunction with a provocative complexity of composition and color that evoke the formal elements of the media being used. As abstract as all of these artists seem, each one bases his or her work on their own specific reality, creating narrative dialogues through abstraction.

Trine Bumiller and Janakie Lennie, with simple imagery and color usage, convey their personal relationship to nature amidst the busy-ness of life. Stephen Pentak and Chris Metze carefully layer and blend colors to bring the viewer into their personal experiences with the landscapes, whether actual or fictional. Tamar Zinn and Julian Jackson create dynamic color fields that emphasize the interaction between light and the geometry of the surrounding cityscapes they see through their studio windows. Pamela Anderson, Lenore Thomas, and Declan Halpin intricately construct colors and forms to express snapshots of personal encounters, relationships, and interactions they have witnessed between people. Nancy Wride’s photographic abstractions narrate the spiritual life that, she as a practicing Mormon, is intensely aware of.
