Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Los Angeles artist
Daniel Brice. The exhibition, Patterson, Texas, focuses on Brice’s creation of abstracted atmospheres inhabited by charcoal lines, which in turn are based on Brice’s interest in landscapes and still-life.
Thick black lines - both straight and organic - traverse through negative space. Lines intermix with smears and erasures and are created by using sponges, Brillo pads, steel wool and other scouring agents. The paper or burlap surface is simultaneously erosive and solid. Using the most minimal means, these elements work together to evoke an atmospheric, airy quality. Brice’s signature lines push at the picture plane; their only constraint is the edge of the paper or stretched burlap. Planes become multi-dimensional, fooling the viewer’s eye with shifts in tone and dabs of color, and the surfaces change and flow. The simplicity of smudged charcoal lines on multiple layers creates a striking and dynamic presence that transforms the surrounding space.
Born in 1961,
Daniel Brice grew up in Glendale, California. He studied painting at California State University at Long Beach and has served as an Artist in Residence at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Brice is included in many private collections across the U.S and Canada. He has also been a part of numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout North America.
